I updated and added some new photos to the Types of Butterflies page. I also put similar types of butterflies close to each other to make comparison identification easier.

May 12, Easy Flowers to Grow

Bulbs are one of the easiest flowers to grow. They are a no-brainer. You plant them once and then you may not have to bother with them for several years. They multiply and you get more and more flowers each year. After several years if they get too crowded and the flowers are getting smaller, it is time to dig them up in the fall, divide and replant. Then there will be more flowers than ever the next year.

I found some red Amaryllis on my property when we bought it. They have huge flowers and are a beautiful red color. Most Amaryllis that you buy in the stores now-a-days are hybrids and they won't bloom true to color from the seeds. But I gave my sister 3 bulbs a while back. After they bloomed she planted the seeds. Last year the seedlings did not bloom, but this year she has 8 flower spikes blooming. How easy is that?

She doesn't live in their outdoor growing range. She grows them in a pot outside during the warm months. And then puts the pot into the barn during the winter when when they are dormant. Here's a photo of her easy, but gorgeous flowers.

Apr 27, Feeding Hummingbirds is Fun!

The hummingbird season is in full force now. Our hummers came back on March 25th, a little early this year because of the warm weather. My sister in Missouri got hers a couple of weeks later.

It's easy making hummingbird food. I prefer the homemade food because it doesn't have anything artificial in it. Check out the page for a recipe to make your own homemade hummingbird nectar. You can make it in any quantity. Keep the feeders clean and the food fresh. Have fun and enjoy watching God's living jewels.

Apr 20, My favorite orchid for growing

If you like growing flowers, you will enjoy growing orchids. Some orchids grow easily in the house and my favorite is the phalaenopsis. They are commonly called the Moth Orchid or Phals. When they were first seen in the jungles from a distance their white flowers looked like a bunch of moths, hence came their name. They now come in many shades of pink, yellow and with various spots and blotches. The main reason they are my favorites is because their flowers last for months.

Phalaenopsis enjoy the same temperatures that people like - not too hot and not too cold. They don't require strong sunlight, so they are ideal for growing in the house. Mine are in full bloom now and here is a photo of a couple of my favorites - the French Spots and a Semi-alba with beautiful red lips. Try your hand at some. Its fun.
Apr 4, Types of Butterflies on Azaleas

I have been seeing so many butterflies this spring, more than were around last summer. I think there were fewer last summer because it was so dry here. There were scads of butterflies on the Azaleas when they were blooming. I have seen Tiger Swallowtails, Giant Swallowtails, Sulfurs, Pipevine Swallowtails, Palamedes Swallowtails, Gulf Fritillaries, Buckeyes, Skippers and various other smaller butterflies that I have not identified, such as a small orange one about 1/2" that I have never seen before. It seems like every time I look out the window there are butterflies flying by. I hope you have been enjoying the different types of butterflies as much as I am.

Mar 29, Backyard Critter looking for Mom

I have my computer desk in front of a window looking out into my backyard. It is great because I can keep an eye open for wildlife while I am working on my computer. Yesterday morning I caught a glimpse of this last year's fawn looking for mom. Pretty soon mom and brother came into the yard. I was surprised that mom is still keeping them around. I figure she will run them off pretty soon because she will be having new ones. But as to date they are still a family and I have enjoyed watching them since last spring. Check out the Backyard Critters page for a photo of mom and baby last spring by my birdbath. I am sure your are enjoying your backyard critters!
