what are flowers for?

I love flowers. I think that is one reason I studied horticulture in college.

They delight our senses and transcend all ages and all cultures.

But they have a more important function besides being pretty.

We can't live without flowersThey Feed Our Spirit and Body

They produce fruit and seeds that feed us.

We also eat the leaves and roots of some plants.

Their blossoms contain the reproductive parts of plants.

The beautiful blossoms are there to make seeds for more plants.

Without them we would not have any more plants or food.

Bees, butterflies or even hummingbirds are attracted by their color or fragrance.

When the pollinators are eating, some pollen gets down into the pistil.

Pollination takes place and seeds are formed to make more plants.

Or even the wind can pollinate some plants.

parts of a flower

There are four main parts; the pistil, stamens, sepals and petals.

Beautiful colors are found in the Petals

Sepals are the green leaf-like structures that cover the bud before it opens.

Stamens are the multiple stem-like parts that have yellow pollen on top of them. The stamens are the male parts.

The Pistil is in the center of the stamens. It is the female part. It has an opening that goes down into a receptacle that holds the nectar for hummingbirds and insects.

After pollination takes place seeds form down inside of the pistil.

After pollination the blossoms provide food for our bodies.

Then we get wonderful fruits or seeds. We may also eat the leaves or roots of the new plants grown from the seeds.

food for wildlife

Beautiful blossoms make food for the animals and birds as well as people. Cows and sheep live off the leaves of plants.

Many animals are especially fond of berries, including everything from Grizzly Bears to Mockingbirds. Deer love apples and many birds live on a diet of mostly seeds.

Most insects and butterflies can’t get down into long trumpet shapes. God made hummingbirds to pollinate this type of blossom.

Hummingbirds do not smell. They go where they can find large nectar reservoirs. Their long bill and tongue allow them to get the nectar out of the deep tubes.

Butterflies are unable to hover and eat like hummingbirds do. They need a landing pad so they can sit down and feed.

They especially like daisies. They provide a good landing pad and they have multiple pistils. So when the butterfly lands, it has many nectar receptacles to feed from.

Flowers provide food for our bellies and pleasure for our senses. We enjoy their beauty, fragrance and the wildlife they attract.

We can't live without this wonderful gift from God!
